The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has announced new changes in the Kenyan currency banknotes.

In a press release from the regulator, CBK announced that the new notes would bear the signatures of the CBK Governor Dr. Kamau Thugge, and National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo.

“The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) is mandated to issue currency as conferred by Article 231 (2) of the Consitution of Kenya and Section 22 (2) of the Central Bank of Kenya Act. In fulfillment of this mandate, the Bank has made some changes to the denominations of Kenyan currency banknotes,” read the release.

Additional features will be the year of print – 2024 and a new security thread with color-changing effects specific to each denomination.

“The rest of the features remain the same as those of those series issued in 2019. All banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the released banknotes,” said CBK.

The new changes will affect the sh.50, sh.100, sh.200, sh.500, and sh.1,000 banknotes.

“Release of the banknotes will commence with sh.1,000, while other denominations will progressively follow in the coming months,” added CBK.

The current banknotes only bear CBK Governor and Board Member signatures.

The inclusion of the PS of the National Treasury is provided for in Legal Notice 72 of 2019.
