Jan-Aug tourism earnings up by 101 percent

Inbound tourism earnings from January to August 2022 increased by 101 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

According to the Tourism Sector Performance Report Jan-Aug 2022, released by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, at least 924,812 tourists visited the country in the last eight months compared to 483, 246 in the same period in 2021.

“Inbound tourism earnings grew to Kshs. 167,098,000,000 compared to Kshs. 83,156,000,000 durin the same period in 2021. This represents a 101% growth year on year,” read the report. 

Highest increase was witnessed in April at 173 percent growth followed by May 166%, June 129%, February 113%, March 109%, July 90% and January at 60%.

August has the least growth at 46 percent which can be attributed to the elections. 

According to the report, the highest number of tourists at 313,466 visited the country for holiday while 274,722 were in the country to visit family and friends.

258,889 were in the country for business, 43,883 were on transit, 16,196 came for education purposes while 8,459 visited the country for religion.  Meanwhile 7,833 were in the country for medical purposes and 1,352 for sports.
