Mombasa Gubernatorial election suspended-IEBC

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has suspended the Mombasa gubernatorial election.

In a media briefing at Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said that suspension has been occasioned by a mix up of pictures of candidates in the gubernatorial bid.

“Ballot papers for Mombasa governors’ position, have wrong pictures and their details printed on them.”Chebukati said 

The contestants in the Mombasa gubernatorial bid Include Abdul Swamad Sharrif of Azimio la Umoja (ODM) and Hassan Omar of Kenya Kwanza (UDA).

Another county which was been affected is Kakamega where there was also a mix-up   up of pictures and other details.

“Ballot papers for Kakamega, gubernatorial have wrong gubernatorial and details on them.”Chebukati said

 IEBC Chairman said that mechanisms are underway to see election conducted in those counties after the elections are published through a gazette notice.

He also pointed that there are constituencies which were affected with anomalies which include, Kacheliba constituency and Pokot South constituency.

The anomalies include wrong details printed on electoral materials.

“Elections for gubernatorial position Kakamega county, gubernatorial position Mombasa county, Kacheliba Constituency, Pokot south constituency; for these four elective positions, elections have been suspended until a later date after publication of gazette notice “He added 

He said that 150,000 police officers will be deployed to man elections country wide.

Chebukati further added that 120,000 domestic and international observers from 872 organizations will also be deployed to oversee the elections.

August 9th electoral exercise is scheduled to start due at 6.00am to 5:00pm with a leeway of extension upon slated delayed hours.
