Three people died at Kibarani after a matatu that was heading to Changamwe lost control and rolled over into oncoming traffic at the Makupa causeway.
The Kitui bound shuttle then rammed into a trailer headed to Makupa head-on.
According to police who arrived at the scene moments later, the three died on the spot while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to Coast General Hospital.
The Thursday morning accident caused a huge traffic snarl stretching up to Changamwe, forcing those headed to Mombasa CBD to walk.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Coast General Hospital mortuary.
