Mombasa County has canceled the monthly clean-up exercise that was scheduled for Saturday the 27th of March.

According to Ilhan Abass, the Mombasa County Chief Officer in the Department of Environment Waste Management and Energy, the exercise was canceled following directives issued by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

“Given our last attendance register, over 2,000 people participated in the clean-up and the estimated attendance for this coming clean up we will be in breach of the set guidelines issued in preventing the spread of COVID-19,” said Abass.

He, however, encouraged residents to ensure the County is clean by cleaning their personal spaces and also plant trees.

“We still hope our purpose for the clean-up can still be achieved. Let us continue to sensitize as many people as possible on the need for taking personal responsibility and proper disposal of waste through our social media platforms,” said Ilhan.
