University students in Mombasa have threatened to hold demos if ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is not set free.
Sonko is currently detained at Gigiri police station for five days.
The students accused the government of harassing Sonko for rejecting the BBI.
According to them leaders perceived to be against the document are harassed for no apparent reason.
They are now calling on deputy president William Ruto to defend his brigade.
“ Ruto should defend his people from this harassment from Uhuru”, they stated.
Sonko on Tuesday morning denied all 12 charges leveled against him.
The charges include assault, robbery with violence and destruction of property linked to alleged forced entry into a property in Buru Buru estate back in 2019.
He is accused of assaulting a Mr Alex Kioko, thereby occasioning him bodily harm.
He is also accused, along with others not before court, of assaulting Mr Musyoki Kavunda and John Mungai Wanjiru at the same property.
Sonko is also to face terrorism charges.
He is accused of recruiting a militia group that disrupted peace and stability in the country.
