The Ministry of Interior will start issuing Huduma Cards once the National Assembly finalizes the appointment of Data Commissioner as directed by court.

Speaking at the Mashujaa Day celebrations where he issued President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta with a sample of Huduma cards, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the cards will be rolled out as soon as the National Assembly completes the process of appointing a Data Commissioner.

10 other Kenyans received their cards during the exercise.

“Your Excellency, today you and the First Lady will be the first recipients of the sample Huduma Namba card. The exercise of issuance of cards will begin once the National Assembly finalizes appointment of Data Commissioner as directed by court,” said Interior CS Fred Matiang’i.

In November last year, President Kenyatta signed the Data Protection Bill into law setting the stage for the controversial Huduma Namba.

The card is a single source of personal identification for citizens and those residing in the country, harmonizing other national registration processes such as signing up for Identity Cards, National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Birth and Death certificates or the Personal Identification Number (PIN) among others.

The President has been reiterating that the Huduma namba will transform civil registration and data management in the country but also tame corruption and fast-track the implementation of the Big 4 development agenda.
