Former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa is dead.

Mkapa died in the late hours of Thursday evening according to an announcement by the Tanzanian president John Pombe Magufuli.

“I am saddened to announce the death of our third president Benjamin Mkapa” Magufuli announced in a national address televised from the administrative capital Dodoma.

Mkapa died while undergoing treatment for an ailment yet to be disclosed in the Tanzanian business capital Dar es Salaam.

Mkapa served as the Tanzanian president from 1995 to 2005 through the Chama Cha Mapinduzi party before handing over power to the fourth president Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

The late president will be remembered for having brokered a peace deal between former president Mwai Kibaki and former prime minister Raila Odinga at the height of the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

In 2015, the former president started chairing the EAC dialogue committee that was seeking to find a solution to the political instability in Burundi.
