Woman killed by elephant while collecting firewood

A woman was trampled to death while collecting firewood at Olgulului group ranch in Kajiado County.

Kenya wildlife have confirmed the incident and said that the unidentified woman was with her friend at the time of the tragedy.

The incident was reported to Amboseli national park on Tuesday evening by the friend who had accompanied the deceased.

According to national geographic survey about 500 people are killed by elephants annually.

Kenya wildlife services on the statement released Wednesday, said that their team rushed to the scene and secured the body.

The body was taken to Loitoktok Mortuary for postmortem.

“She was killed while collecting firewood” KWS said

The friend to the deceased escaped unhurt.

Head of corporate communication Ngugi Gecage said that they had reached the family of the deceased to condole and comfort them following the unfortunate incident.

The latest incident comes amid surge in cases of human-wildlife conflict which also poses a threat to wildlife survival needs.

The government has so far compensated 452 human deaths, 4,555 human injuries, 5,073 crop damage cases, 3,012 livestock predation cases and 33 for property destruction, according to KWS.
