The parliamentary committee on trade and industry Chair Kanini Kega has thrown Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) MD Benard Njiraini out of the committee.

Kega ordered that Njiraini steps out of the committee meeting after it emerged that he flouted orders which were initially laid by the chair.

The chair gave orders that the KEBS boss should not in any way consult with the industrialization CAS  Lawrence Karanja who was appearing before the committee together as the meeting was ongoing.

“I had ordered  that you should not consult in any way, which you have not done, now I order that you step out, “Kega ordered

Members of the committee had agreed that Njiraini will remain in the committee as the legislators were discussing issues to do with his appointment as KEBS MD which was in question.

Kipkelion Member of parliament Hillary Kosgey petitioned parliament on the process of recruitment of Njiraini arguing that due process was not followed.

Kosgey alleges that Njiraini was chosen as the MD of the KEBS yet he was number five during interviewing yet only one was supposed to be chosen from a total of three.

“Joseph Muriira was number one, Nickson Kipkemoi two then Martin Chesire, Ishmail Shaile a, John Wamati then , Bernard Njiraini,”Kosgey said.
Ultimately, Njiraini ‘s ouster was a temporal measure as he was allowed to come back after the matter concerning him was exhaustively executed.

In 2019 the then Industry, Trade, and Cooperative Peter Munya had appointed Njiraini as the MD KEBS  after the board had done interviews and forwarded then to the CS to act on them.

He becomes the third KEBS MD after the substantive exit of the CEO Charles Ongwae.
