Two police officers are in custody after they were arrested over receiving a bribe of sh 100.
The two police officers named Patrick Safari and Joseph Kiptui were arrested after the coast regional police commander Rashid Yakub found them allegedly soliciting a bribe of sh 100 from motorists in Mavueni, Kilifi south subcounty.
The 100 shillings in question had been dropped by a matatu driver on the road when the police commander picked the money up.
“ He picked the note and instructed the officers to board his car ,drove them to the Kilifi police station and handed them over to the sub-county police commander” statement that was recorded at Kilifi police station.
This comes less than a week after police officer and EACC officers clashed along the Kisumu –Kakamega highway over bribery allegations.
Drama started after the EACC officers attempted to arrest the officers who had allegedly been receiving bribes from motorists along the busy highway.
However the officers attempted to escape to a nearby thicket while shooting in the air in an attempt to scare away the EACC officers.
Motorists have always complained of constant harassment by traffic police officers who demand hefy bribes.
On 16th November, Likoni DCIO Charles Onyango was arrested by EACC sleuths after he was allegedly found receiving a bribe.
A report released by the anti-corruption body last week ranked the National Police Service as the most corrupt institution.
