Kilifi county leading in no of people affected by drought

Statistics released by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) have shown that 106,100 people in the coastal region have been affected by drought.

Kilifi county has been stated to have the highest number with 60,300 and Kwale having 45,800.

Affected areas are mainly  Ganze, Magarini, Kaloleni, Kinango and  Lungalunga.

“The 2018 short rains were generally late and erratic. Rainfall onset was 20-30 days late in the south-eastern marginal agricultural areas and more than 40 days late in the Northern pastoral and Coastal marginal agricultural areas.” the statement read.

The National Government has provided a total of Kshs. 1,351,196,000 for response during the period of February, March and April 2019, this is meant to assist the 12 counties that have been affected by drought in the country.
