Nairobi, KENYA: There was disruption at Barclays bank, Queensway Branch, in Nairobi on Tuesday after police found fake two billion shillings stashed in the bank.
According to Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti, the amount which was in fake US dollars was found stashed in a client’s safe deposit box.
Detectives camped at the Queensway branch investigating the matter after Flying Squad officers intercepted a customer who allegedly stashed the money in the safe deposit box.
Operations at the bank were temporarily disrupted as onlookers filled the area to get a glimpse of what was going on.
In a statement, Barclays bank indicated that it was cooperating and will continue to assist authorities in the investigations.
“The customer had concealed fake currency in his personal safe deposit box against the bank’s rules and regulations which include restriction of items which can be held in the safe deposit box,” read the statement in part.
“The content of personal fake deposit boxes are not part of the bank’s deposits and are only known to the client,” it continues to read.
Four suspects were arrested in connection to the matter.
