Nairobi,KENYA: The President of the Judiciary David Maraga has defended the courts on allegations that it derails graft cases in the country.
Speaking during the swearing in of Ethics and Anti-corruption commission EACC Twalib Abdala Mbarak as the new Chief Executive Officer, Maraga urged the agencies involved in the fight against corruption to ensure they bring cases that they can back up with enough evidence.
“Please bring cases to court when you are ready, if we ask you to start the hearing the following day depending on whether the accused would have been given an opportunity to prepare, then we will be ready to proceed”, Urged Maraga.
Maraga argued that a number of times the courts adjourn cases because the witnesses are not available during the proceedings.
However, Maraga said that the fight on corruption is not a one-man show rather a combination of all government agencies which can be achieved through following the right procedures enshrined in the constitution.
He further sounds a warning to a few individuals who use judiciary as a scapegoat on their weak cases, saying such cases will not see the light of the day.
On the other hand, the new sworn in EACC CEO Mr. Mbarak said during in his speech that he aims to build and strengthen EACC’s intelligence and undercover capabilities in order to allow the anti-graft body tackle emerging threats and identify proactive lines as opposed to reactive investigations.
Present during the session include; Attorney General Paul Kihara, Director of public prosecution DPP Noordin Haji, Director of criminal investigation DCI George Kinoti, EACC Charman Eliud Wabukala among others.
