London. ENGLAND: Manchester United have sacked head coach Jose Mourinho barely two days after they were humiliated 3-1 by Liverpool.

The 55 year old has been sent packing following a dismal performance that has seen the club amass paltry 26 points, 19 shy of leaders Liverpool after 17 matches.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect. The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” reads in a part a statement from the club.

The club has confirmed that legend, Michael Carrick who has been deputizing under Mourinho will be in charge of training for the coming days before a replacement is made in 48 hours.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane have been linked with the Old Trafford job in the recent weeks with the former preferred following his Premier League experience with the London based club.

Manchester United has been paired with French giants PSG in the round of 16 of the UEFA champions league.
