Boost for tourism as Qatar Airways launches direct flights to Mombasa from Dubai

Mombasa, KENYA: Tourists coming to the Coast from Dubai will no longer have to stress about connecting flights.

Qatar Airways in partnership with Kenya Airways on Sunday launched direct flight from Doha, Dubai to Moi International Airport in Mombasa with approximately of 500 passengers every week.

The inaugural flight from Doha touched down in Mombasa on Sunday morning and was received by Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi and Kenya Tourism Board( KTB) CEO Betty Rachier.

Rachier said that the direct flight was not just an endorsement of the destination but a vote of confidence on the Kenyan Coast in terms of Tourism.

“This is good news for the sector and together with the private sector. KTB will look into ways of partnering with Qatar airways as well as other airlines to increase passenger numbers into the route,”said Betty.

For the past nine months, Moi International Airport has recorded a total 84,286 visitors which is a 46% growth from 57,588 recorded in the same period last year.

Qatar Airways will be operating four weekly flights to Mombasa and this will bring to a total of 25 weekly flights between Doha and Kenya.

Kingi said the move by Qatar Airways has provided an opportunity that will enable Mombasa and Dubai strengthen ties through tourism.

“The new flight heralds a new chapter for the leisure and business in Mombasa. It opens new possibilities for the tourism sector. We are happy to welcome Qatar Airways to Mombasa,” said Kingi.

The Qatar Airways plane A320 with 12 business class seats and 120 seats in Economy class, had 100 dignitaries from Dubai on board.
