Kwale, KENYA: Police in Kwale County are searching for a woman believed to have thrown her baby in Shimba hills forest in Kinarini area, Matuga sub-county after giving birth.

Confirming the incident, Matuga OCPD Joel Chesire said the baby was abandoned by her mother at around 1 pm on Thursday afternoon but later rescued by people who heard her cry from the forest.

“At the moment the baby has been taken to hospital for a check-up,” he said.

Chesire urged the public to provide police with any relevant information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect.

“If you know of a lady who was pregnant and now she is not, just report to a nearby police station for action to be taken,” he said adding that ladies should stop dumping babies especially if they know they are not ready to get pregnant.

His sentiments were echoed by Kinarini village elder Nassir Maulid who also warned women against the immoral behavior saying it is against the law.

“Women should know that it is unacceptable before God and law to dump a baby hence one should be punished,” he said.
