Mombasa, KENYA: The office of public prosecution in Mombasa has filed notice of motion in Mombasa law court seeking to withdraw charges against six Mombasa republican council (MRC) leaders.

Mombasa principal prosecution council Jami Yamina told the court that he wanted charges against MRC leaders withdrawn following a previous decision by the court of appeal.

In 2016, the court of appeal upheld the decision of high court that banning of MRC by the Government was unconstitutional.

Omar Mwamnuzi, Hamza Randu, Mohammed Rashid Mraja and three others are facing charges of being members of the MRC group as well as being in possession of MRC T-shirts.

The suspects were arrested in Kwale County in 2012 for allegedly being members of the MRC group since 2005.

‘Your honour we intend to withdraw the charges against the six accused persons but I need more time to read the judgement delivered by court of appeal in Attorney General verses Hamza Randu and two others,” said Yamina.

Matter to be mentioned before Principal Francis Kyiambia on 6th December.
