Kwale, KENYA: Two suspects were on Monday night arrested by police in Kwale county after they were found in possession of a firearm at Mtsamviani area, Matuga sub-county.

According to the Matuga OCPD Joseph Chesire, the suspects Hamisi Kassim and Mohammed Nyundo were arrested at 1am and they are being detained at Kwale police station.

The two suspects were apprehended after police received reports from locals who knew about their whereabouts.

Chesire said that the duo would be arraigned in court after police have completed investigations into the incident.

He urged locals to work together with the police by providing them with information that would help identify culprits who would, in turn, be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Last year two police officers died after they were attacked by gunmen in Kwale.

The two police officers had been guarding the St. Pauls church in Ukunda when the attackers struck making away with an AK-47 and a G3 rifle.

Earlier in the year, Kwale county commissioner Karuku Ngumo told journalists that police were yet to recover the AK-47 firearm stolen during the raid.

It is not yet clear if the firearm recovered was the same one stolen during the raid.
