Mombasa,KENYA:Four people are currently being detained in Mtito Andei town over vandalizing the metre gauge railway.

The four who include three suspects and their driver were nabbed by detectives on Thursday evening in man eater’s area of Mtito Andei.

According to detectives, the four suspects had been vandalizing the railway and loading the materials into a waiting truck when they were ambushed by detectives and Kenya Wildlife Service officers.

Items recovered during the operation include cable wires, nuts and rollers.

The four suspects are Andi Ibrahim who is the driver of the vehicle,Bernard Mwadime ,Paul Wambua  and Nelson Kenneth.

The four are expected to be arraigned once investigations into the matter are completed.

The Kenya Railways has been grappling with rampant cases of the old railway being vandalized.

Two weeks ago, two suspects were arrested after they were found ferrying metals believed to have been vandalized from the Kipekelion- Butere  section of the metre gauge railway.

The arrest came just a few weeks after another trader was nabbed ferrying railway parts in Muhoroni sub-county in Kisumu.

During the launch of the Standard Gauge Railway last year, president Uhuru Kenyatta warned that those caught vandalizing the SGR would be charged with economic sabotage.

This was after the China Road and Bridge Company which is constructing the SGR was forced to repair a section of the railway in Mariakani which had been vandalized just a few days before the launch.
