Nairobi, KENYA: Former Nyandarua governor Daniel Waithaka and former water executive Grace Gitonga have been arrested in Nyeri over corruption charges.

The former governor and water executive presented themselves to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in Nyeri on Thursday after the Director of Public Prosecution(DPP) Noordin Haaji ordered their arrest.

“The former county boss and Ms. Gitonga will be charged with willful failure to comply with the law relating to public procurement, contrary to section 45 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, 2003,” read part of a statement by DPP Haji.

The former governor is charged with misuse of office and engaging in a project without prior planning, contrary to procurement laws.

The DPP said investigations had indicated that the former governor flouted procurement laws and regulations in awarding the contract to M/S Tahal Consulting Engineers Ltd in December 2014 which led to the loss of sh.50 million through water and sewage tender which was awarded fraudulently.

Other officials from Nyandarua county government implicated in the scandal include; Mr. Kihiu Gichinga Gaiko, Mr. John Ngigi Daniel and Mr. Jesse Wachira Mwangi whom the EACC detectives are in pursuit of.
