Kwale,KENYA:The Kwale international sugar company has been ordered to empty a dam that has been leaking to avert a tragedy.

The Mkurudumzi dam which is currently holding 2.3 million cubic metres of water has been leaking causing panic among local area residents.

The order was given when the Water Resources Management Authority’s officials inspected the dam on Monday.

According to Engineer Ahmed Mbarak, the company had constructed the dam without a permit.

“The company went ahead to build the dam without a permit and even after applying for one, it is yet to be issued because there are conditions it has not met,” Engineer Mbaraka told The Star.

The authority officials said that the company was supposed to empty the dam within one-week failure to which action would be taken.

This comes amidst a probe into the Solai dam burst which claimed 48 lives in May.
