Tana River,KENYA:68,800 children are being targeted in a mass polio vaccination exercise in Tana River county that is scheduled to kick off on 11th July.
According to Dr Oscar Endekwa the Tana River health director, the exercise is set to be conducted in all health centres and bus stations .
“ This year we are targeting 68,800 children , last year we vaccinated over 58,000 children.The number keeps increasing annually” Oscar said.
The county has been one of the 17 counties where the ministry of health has increased cross border polio surveillance since May amidst the detection of a rare polio virus in Eastleigh Nairobi that was in 2017 detected in Mogadishu.
The surveillance has been increased from monthly to weekly.
The current oral polio vaccination is set to run concurrently with an outbreak response campaign in Somalia .
