Nairobi, KENYA: Patel dam owner Perry Mansukh Kansagara together with his farm General Manager Vinoj Kumar and other officials on Thursday surrendered themselves to Naivasha Police station.
This comes a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji ordered for their arrest on Wednesday for manslaughter.
They were then arraigned in court where they were charged with manslaughter.
“Owner of Solai Patel Dam, Perry Mansukh & 2 other accused persons have appeared @Naivasha Law Courts. The prosecution has asked court to issue warrant of arrest to 6 others. #SolaiDamDisaster” Read a tweet from the office of the DPP.
According to the office of the DPP, Perry Mansukh together with GM Vinoj Kumar & Nakuru County Director of Water Johnson Kamau Njuguna pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter, neglect of duty & failure to prepare environmental impact assessment reports of the dam.
Several Water Resources Authority and National Environment Management Authority officers have also been targeted over the Patel Dam tragedy that killed 47 people in May and left many others injured in Solai, Nakuru County.
After investigations, DPP Noordin Haji found that the construction of the dam was done by unqualified staff using farm equipment leading to the construction and design flaws.
According to the Nakuru DCI Gideon Kibunga, the six will be arrested by the DCI officials if they do not surrender willingly.
