Kilifi,KENYA: Authorities in Kilifi county have moved to enforce a ban on night vigil festivities popularly known as disco Matanga’s that was issued in 2016 prompting an outrage of disco owners in Kilifi South sub-county.
In a letter seen by Baraka FM written by Kilifi county commissioner Josephat Mutisya , to all deputy county commissioners , the county commissioner wants the night ban reinforced citing negative effects of night festivities to the academic performance of school children.
“ Loud music /Discos are being played week in week out over light spaces allowing no space for our children to study or even adequately sleep so as to prepare so as to prepare fo the following day.School going children loiter in the day in search of where the music comes from” Reads part of the letter.
This has been prompted by a complaint by the Kilifi county department of public service which has cited the presence of the discos as the reason why the performance students in Kilifi has always been low .
“Our education records in our county is detrimentally very low .The countrywide academic ranking says it all” Reads the letter written by the Kilifi county secretary Anold Mkare to the county commissioner.
The county commissioner has further requested his deputies to help county officials in their quest to reinforce the ban.
Part of the reinforcement involves the ban on issuance of noise permits.
Kilifi was among the first counties to ban the vigil.
Last year Siaya county also issued a ban on the vigils citing crime and immorality.
