Mombasa,KENYA:The Mombasa chapter of the of the capital Youth Caucus association which is an association of university students wants the Nairobi regeneration project  halted or subjected to a referendum a month after its project team was formed.

Speaking on Tuesday afternoon at the Lotus Hotel in Mombasa, the secretary general of the body made up of students from Pwani University,University of Nairobi,Technical University of Mombasa,Moi University,Kenyatta University and Mombasa Aviation , Evans Momanyi questioned the motive behind the Nairobi regeneration project claiming it’s a strategy to strip the governor’s powers.

“We demand that the ongoing strategy of taking the governors powers enshrined the constitution and the county government through the so called Nairobi regeneration project by the national government , must end immediately or subject that to a referendum” Momanyi said.

The student body called on governors to rally behind the Nairobi governor terming the project as a disrespect to devolution.

Momanyi questioned why the governors had remained silent amid the withdrawal of governor Mike Sonko’s security.

“ We are calling on all the governors to Rally behind the Nairobi governor and we are demanding restoration of governors Sonko’s security in full capacity” Momanyi added.

The ambitious Nairobi regeneration project which is being chaired by the Naiorbi governor Mike Sonko and Tourism CS Najib Balala promised to clean up Nairobi within 30 days as well as dealing with traffic jam and garbage.

However the project team which was formed mid last month and promised to resign should they fail to deliver on their objectives remains short of achieving their set objectives with a survey carried out by research firm TIFA revealing that governor Mike Sonko’s performance was below average.
Last week the Nairobi governor Mike Sonko nominated embattled Lawyer Miguna Miguna as his deputy sparking sharp critiscm from some members of the Jubilee party like the Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja who expressed doubts on Sonko’s choice.
