KRA destroys illicit liquor, cigarettes worth sh. 48 M in Mombasa

Mombasa, KENYA: Kenya Revenue Authority on Wednesday destroyed 60,000 litres of illicit liquor and 2,000 cigarette.

Addressing journalists in Mombasa during the exercise on Wednesday, KRA Deputy commissioner Southern region Mr. Nicholas Ngeera said that the contraband were impounded following the ongoing countrywide operation lead by KRA enforcement Unit in conjunction with a Multi Agency team.

“These goods were seized since the owners contravened the law governing importation of goods in the Country and manufactures of excisable goods in the country,” said Ngeera.

The destruction was carried out by the KRA, KEBS, Anti counterfeit authority, the police NEEMA,NACADA at Kipevu sewage treatment works in Mombasa.

Mr.Ngeera further said the crackdown is aimed at ridding the market of illicit alcoholic beverages and cigarettes and other prohibited or restricted imported goods.

KRA has said the investigations are ongoing to ensure due legal process is followed and culprits are brought to book.
