Nairobi, KENYA: Betting firm Sportpesa has returned its sponsorship to sports entities in the country.

In a presser on Monday, Sportpesa which is the leading gambling firm in the country announced that it will be sponsoring Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kenya Premier League and the Football Kenya Federation.

The three-year deal will see Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards pocket Sh198 million and 159m respectively while FKF and KPL will cash in Sh69 million and Sh259million in that order.

Sportpesa withdrew its sponsorship last year protesting Government’s decision to tax betting firms 35 percent of gross profit aiming to deter youths from gambling.

It remains unclear though whether the Government has agreed to lower the taxation percentage since the Sports Principle Secretary Kirimi Kaberia who attended Monday’s unveiling had promised to look into the matter.

Meanwhile, the return of Sportpesa is a sigh of relief to Gor Mahia who has been facing financial challenges which almost caused them their Caf confederations cup return leg match last week before Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko bailed them out.
