Nairobi,KENYA:The government has launched a NHIF cover for students studying in Public secondary schools.

The cover which was launched on Saturday will see the government pay a premium of sh 1350 for every student.

Speaking during the launch at state house on Sartuday, President Kenyatta said the cover will ease the burden of parents paying insurance cover for their children.

“This will ensure that our students access quality health services and thereby easing the burden from their parents and guardians,” President Kenyatta said.

The president also directed the Ministry to ensure that the cover would help the students access medical care in facilities near their schools to ensure they do not miss classes.

“Since students are expected to be in school most of the time, the provider must ensure that they access medical services close to school,” The president added.

About 3 million students registered in government secondary schools are expected to benefit from the cover which is estimated to cost the government sh 4.05 B.

The medical cover is set to kick off beginning next term.
