Death toll from Tana River floods rises to 6 after body of woman is found

Tana River,KENYA:A body of a woman who drowned on Monday evening has been found at Bilbil, Bura in Tana River County today morning.

According to  an eye witness Abdullahi Mude , the woman had been travelling  on a Tcoach bus from Garissa to Mombasa  when she  and other passengers encountered flooded waters  of river Hirimani whose banks had broken making a section of the Garissa –Bura road  impassable.

The passengers alighted so as to make it safer from them to cross and that’s when she was swept by the waters.

“ She tried crossing the flooded waters but when she stepped into the water she sank after about 3 minutes and we could see her body floating on the other side of the road” Mude told Baraka FM.

Kenya Red cross societyboss Mr. Jerald Bombe confirmed the incident.

According to Mr. Bombe over 400 families in Bakuyu in Tana North Sub county have been displaced by floods.

The incident raised the number of people drowned within three days to be six after such incidents occurred a few days ago.

The manager added that already he had deployed a rescue team on the ground to gather  more reports of those affected.

On Monday afternoon two children from same family drowned in an overflowing pond at their home in Bura town when playing.

Confirming to Baraka Fm Bura OCPD Mr. Tom Okoth said the two children were playing at their home near a pond before drowning.

“The children have drowned in a pond which had been dug for home use but I don’t know how they  fell into the  pond,” said the OCPD.

The incident comes two days after a family lost their beloved children in river Tana when crossing river Tana on Firday last week.

Floods in the county have affected area of Madogo, Mororo, Bakuyu and other parts of Tana North sub – county.
