Three dead more than 40 injured in Taita Taveta, Meru accidents

Taita Taveta ,KENYA: Three people lost their lives and more than 40 were injured in various incidents of road carnage on Sunday.

In the first incident, one person died and more than 28 injured after a bus they were traveling in rolled at Mlangoni along the Wundayi- Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County .

According to the Taita Taveta county police commander Fred Ochieng, the bus was headed to Mombasa from a funeral in Taita Taveta  when it lost control and rolled over landing in a ditch 50 metres away.

Kenya redcross reported that 28 people had been injured in the Sunday  mid day incident.

The passengers were part of Kenya Ports Authority staff who had gone to bury their former colleague.

The Injured were taken to the Wundayi Sub-county hospital and the Moi referral hospital in Voi.

In yet another incident a driver and passenger lost their lives when two 14 seater matatu’s collided in Meru county on Sunday evening.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened at the Mutonga bridge along the Meru-Chuka road.

A Nissan matatu belonging Mekina Sacco which was headed to the Chuka direction was attempting to overtake when it collided with a Meru Nissan Sacco matatu which was headed to Meru, leaving one of the drivers and a passenger dead.

Officials from the PCEA Chogoria mission hospital confirmed receiving 2 bodies and 27 injured passengers.

This comes amidst a night travel ban issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority in a bid to curb road carnage incidents.
