Mombasa, KENYA: Three people are nursing serious injuries after they were butchered overnight in Ushindi area, Likoni, Mombasa county.

The three victims who were rushed to Coast General hospital were attacked by unknown assailants numbering 50 at around 8 pm, police said.

“They were armed with machetes and clubs and asked for our identity cards before attacking the victims,” said an eyewitness.

The suspects did not steal anything from the victims.

Likoni police boss Benjamin Rotich confirmed to Baraka FM on Tuesday that the three were treated and discharged and that investigations have been launched.

“We have launched the investigation to unravel what could be the motive of the attacks, no arrests have so far been made,” he said.

The Police were quickly deployed to pursue the attackers who fled in the alleys of Likoni.

The more than fifty officers used  motorbikes to pursue the suspects.

All the three who were attacked are male aged between 30 and 35.

Police disputed that the criminal gangs of watalia and wakalikwanza who have been terrorizing residents in Likoni and parts of Kisauni, are behind the attacks.

Police sources link the attack with Thursday repeat presidential polls.

Earlier, police reports revealed to Baraka FM that some powerful politicians in the county might be behind the attacks.

Sources within the police force said more than 100 gang members are said to be planted in each sub-county to destabilize peace in the elections exercise.

The sub-counties mention are Likoni, Kisauni, NJali, Jomvu, Changamwe and Mvita.
