Mombasa,KENYA:A 3-year-old boy has died after falling into a septic tank at Jomvu primary school in Changamwe Mombasa.
The boy identified as Ismael fell into the septic tank as he was leaving a pit latrine.
Eye witnesses told Baraka FM that the pit latrine was covered with some three leaves while the state of the floor of the toilet was in bad condition as at had deep cracks .
Angry residents who blamed the school management over what they termed as ‘negligence’ arrived in the school and threw rocks at the headmaster’s office breaking his office and other classrooms which were under construction in an attempt to lynch him .
“Members of the community helped retrieve the boy but unfortunately he had already passed on,”the eyewitnesses told Baraka FM .
“There are serious questions about the role and responsibility of the teachers at this school, as well as the infrastructure in this school,we want answers or else we won’t allow learning to continue.” said another agitated woman.
Parents protested in the school compound asking the government to take action against the headteacher.
They later took away their children from the school as the teachers chased away the irrate parents.
Changamwe police boss Peter Omwana confirmed the incident saying they had launched investigations and warned stern actions will be taken against those involved in the negligence.
”We have been told the boy was playing with other kids outside the compound when he fell into the septic tank but died as he was being taken to a nearby hospital,”said the police boss.
“We will investigate anyone including the school teachers on what actually transpired but as for now we want to ask the parents to be calm as we have taken up the matter,”added the police boss.
He said the family took the boys body for burial according to Islam culture.
