Man arrested for gun possession at the Ferry

Mombasa, KENYA: Detectives at Likoni Ferry police station are holding a man nabbed with a firearm.

The suspect identified as Sammy Muga was arrested at around 8:30am Wednesday, as he was about to cross the ferry from Likoni side to Island.

He was armed with a pistol loaded with 14 ammunition and  claimed that he was from Kwale county heading to work in Mombasa.

Police sources at ferry told Baraka FM that a good Samaritan tipped the police based at the Ferry police station after spotting a protruding handle of gun tucked on his waist.

Four police officers in uniform moved swiftly and detained the suspect who was later transferred to the Ferry police station for grilling.

He told detectives he was a an officer from KWS and even produced his job identity card.

“The officers were not satisfied for two reasons;the pistol had less ammunition instead of 15 raising queries,two the suspect failed to notify police at ferry station that he was armed before he cross.” Said the police source.

Detectives from regional police station are expected to grill the suspect for more details.

Likoni Deputy OCPD Anthony Shimoli confirmed the incident to Baraka FM and said the suspect is being interrogated.

“The suspect has been arrested and we are investigating to know why he was in possession of a gun.” Said Shimoli.

Police believe suspects who stole firearms might use the channel as they escape police arrest, due to the ongoing massive crackdown in Kwale.
