Nairobi,KENYA:NGO coordination board director Fazul Mohamed wants the African centre for open governance (AFRICOG ) closed.

In a letter written to the director of criminal investigations Ndegwa Muhoro on Tuesday , Fazul has accused AFRICOG of operating without registration.

“African centre for open governance (AFRICOG) is described as a non-governmental organization working in the area of democracy ,transparency and open governance in Kenya. The board has however noted that AFRICOG is not registered under the NGO’s coordination act 1990 as required by law.Infact AFRICOG is and continues to operate as a charitable organization in direct contravention of section 22(I) which according to the act is an offence punishable by Law” Reads part of the statement.

Fazul has also urged the office of the DCI to arrest the directors and members of the NGO and also urged the central Bank to freeze all accounts associated with the NGO .

According to the constitution, offences allegedly committed by the Members of AFRICOG attract a penalty and a jail term of 18 months.

However, one of the board members at AFRICOG Maina Kiai earlier decried the move by the Kenyan government as political and in relation to Kenyan elections.

AFRICOG becomes the third NGO to be targeted by the NGO coordination board in less than a month.
On Monday, Fazul deregistered the Kenya Human rights commision chaired by Makau Mutua over alleged Tax evasion and false declaration of assets.
