Lamu,KENYA:The death toll from the Lamu boat tragedy has risen to 10.

This is according to one of the rescue operators who spoke to Baraka FM on phone.

The boat which is believed to have disappeared at around midday on Sunday at the Indian ocean was travelling from Kizingitini to Lamu island is also  believed to have been carrying Mr Shekue Kahale an ODM politician from  the area who came in second in the Lamu east parliamentary election of the just concluded polls.

“The boat was carrying 12 people and so far 10 corpses have been recovered  while 2 people have been found alive” said Awadh Ali who was part of the search team

Earlier, the Linda Boni operation director Joseph Kanyiri said that Mr Kahale had been found alive but still shaken and not in a position to narrate what had really happened.

Rescue operations are still ongoing  and according to the county commissioner rough  waters of the Indian ocean caused  the boat to capsize.

This becomes the second boat accident in the county in less than two months.

In June a boat accident in the same county claimed 10 lives.
