Lamu, KENYA: A driver to a senatorial candidate in Lamu county and four of his supporters escaped death by a whisker after their vehicle lost control and rolled severally as they fled from suspected Alshabaab militants in Lamu on Thursday.

According to the candidate Abdalla Shelali, together with team, they were heading for campaigns slated for Mavuno,Poromoko and Hongwe when they came across three dead bodies and a torched vehicle at Milihoi.

Shelali says it immediately dawned on them that the three had been killed just seconds before they arrived at the place and that meant that the militants were not far away from the area.

“We reached Milihoi at around 3.30pm.We found a Kenya Red cross vehicle there. They suggested I ride with them since it was too risky which I did.My driver and the four occupants were following us.They were driving furiously fast due to the fear and tension. As such the vehicle rolled,” said Shelali.

The driver is still admitted at the Mpeketoni sub county hospital after he suffered serious injuries on the legs and shoulders.

The four other occupants were treated for minor injuries at the same facility and allowed to go home.

The vehicle, Toyota Double Cabin was badly damaged during the accident.

“I am fine.My driver is still being treated at Mpeketoni hospital. The other four were treated and discharged on Thursday evening. The vehicle was badly damaged but that’s not our priority right now,” he said.
