Mombasa,KENYA:A student on Tuesday jumped off a moving ferry in Likoni in what is being described as attempted suicide.
According to an eyewitness, the 22 year old male student waited until the ferry was in the middle of the channel before he jumped off.
“We saw him jumping into the water without any hesitation as the ferry was heading to the mainland, said the eyewitness.
A Kenya Ferry services officer told Baraka FM the student identified as Alex Mwaluma was however rescued by their emergency team.
It also posted the information on its facebook page.
“A young man was rescued by our rescue team at around 1;30 pm from the sea after going overboard from Mv. Nyayo. The Kenya ferry unit team was at hand to respond to the emergency and later transferred the victim to hospital”, it says.
A Kenya Red Cross official said the victim was rushed to Aga khan hospital where he was admitted in the Intensive care unit ICU.
It was not immediately established why the student wanted to end his life.
Incidences of people jumping off ferries at the Likoni channel in attempted suicide have become common.
