Govt appoints task force to oversee land lease crisis

Nairobi, KENYA: Lands ministry has appointed a task force to oversee the land leases crisis being witnessed in the sector.

Speaking in his office in Nairobi on Tuesday, Lands and Physical Planning CS Prof Jacob Kaimenyi said that the task force was appointed to address challenges of reviewing the process of extension and renewal of land leases.

“The task force will among other things analyze and review the existing policy legal and institutional framework on processing of extension and renewal of leases.”Prof Kaimenyi said.

He indicated that the formation of a such task force is key because the issue of extension and renewal of land leases; has far reaching implications on foreign and local investors.

The formation of the task force was due to several complaints launched in the Ministry by citizens who term the extension and renewal of leases as unpredictable;while others lose their land in an unclear circumstances.

The task force is expected to submit the report to the cabinet secretary after six months.
