Passenger locomotives for SGR arrive in Mombasa ahead of June launch

Mombasa,KENYA:Thirty-one Passenger Coaches to be used on the standard Gauge railway (SGR) arrived in Mombasa on Saturday and offloaded at berth 11 at the Port of Mombasa.

The consignment also includes two passenger Locomotives and four freight locomotives. Each of the Soft-Seat coaches will accommodate 72 passengers while the Hard-Seat Coaches will carry 118 passengers.

Standard Gauge Railway project coordinator Eng.Johnston Matu received the locomotive machines at the port.

Speaking to journalists at berth 11, Eng. Matu said that the offloading process will take four days because it is delicate. “After offloading the machines will be taken to the marshaling yard at Mombasa West Station which is 4km from the port”, he said.

They include 6 freight locomotives, 2 passenger locomotive and 31 passenger coaches. He also said the locomotives will be checked before taken to Nairobi for further inspection. IMG-20170128-WA0000 “They will be taken to Nairobi marshaling yard where again they will go through a thorough inspection now on land to ensure that the performance indicators which we had specified are properly met.” said Matu.

According to Matu, only 44 are locomotives are remaining where 12 of them are expected in the mid March. However he dismissed claims going round on social media that the machines are fake. “What I want to assure the public is that he locomotives that we receive are the best in China.They are being manufacture by the biggest manufacture in the country and the quality measures were checked.” He assured.
