Mombasa, KENYA: More than 400 workers of Bake ‘N’ Bite Confectioneries Company in Mombasa have been left jobless after the company was placed under receivership early November 2016.
Chanting protests songs outside the gated confectioneries building in Ganjoni area on Tuesday, the workers blamed the company for remaining silent and closing the gates on them without notice.
According to workers, they are lamenting over three months delayed salary and other financial benefits that the company owes them.
Joshua Mudhusi – a worker for Bake ‘N’ Bite for over 12 years, said blamed the management did not inform them of the receivership despite the fact of being the loyal employees.
“On 16th November 2016 we saw on the newspaper that the company is on receivership, we have not received any information if we are still at work or we have been rendered jobless”. Said, Mr. Mudhusi.
Ms. Peris Odhiambo is another employee who said that they are languishing in poverty for lack of finances to take care of their families.
“I have worked for the company for 10 years now, we are really suffering because we have not paid our house rents since last November and our children have not reported to schools. We don’t know what to do because our employer has sidelined us, we have tried to seek his indulgence but in vain.” She said.
Bite ‘N’ Bite confectioneries are widely known for making breads, cakes among other pastry products.
Efforts by Baraka FM to get comments from the management were futile.
