Mombasa, KENYA: Likoni Mijikenda elders have said they are not likely to support a woman candidature for the area MP seat in the August 2017 General Elections.

Speaking on Sunday during a meeting of more than 2000 elders in Likoni, they said it’s against their Mijikenda custom for a woman to lead men.

According to the elders’ chairman Rashid Doka, women cannot be trusted with higher positions unlike men who can face many challenges that they may encounter.

Doka noted that men are decisive and firm hence better placed to take up positions such as the area MP.

“You see all these men here with grey hair are wise.We have sat and consulted widely. We have arrived at our decision and what remains is to vet aspirants,” he said.

They however said, they will support women candidature in other elective positions such as Members of County Assembly (MCAs), Women Reps and clerical jobs at County governments.

Hivi vigogo wamefikiria kuwa hii nafasi tumpe mwanamume. Sasa huyu-mwanamke akilia, tutamwambia kuna kazi nyingine nyuma nyuma huko, -These elders have decided to install a man. If a woman asks queries, we shall inform her of other positions she can fit in),” they said.

Likoni ODM chairman Hassan Domoko was installed to vie for the parliamentary seat.
