Two brothers from Mombasa County might not join national schools next week after their mother failed to raise the fees required to have them admitted to form one.
12-year-old Issa Kamau, his 14-year-old brother Yassir Kamau scored 400 and 392 marks in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (Kcpe) respectively and are supposed to join Starehe boys and Kakamega high school respectively.
According to their mother Hawa Ali, the two who studied under a scholarship at the St David School in Mishoromoni, Kisauni sub-county fear that their hard work could go down the drain.
“My sons worked hard and performed excellently but as it is now they fear that their dreams could be shattered”, Hawa told Baraka Fm.
Hawa who is a single mother of four and a casual laborer says she relies on manual work to fend for her family.
According to a directive from the Ministry of Education, all students are supposed to report to school on 13th January 2020 which is less than a week away.
Her second born son Issa Kamau who was the third best student at the St David’s school in Mishomoroni says his dream which is to become a Neurosurgeon is hanging in the balance.
Issa has been fortunate enough to receive a partial scholarship from the Starehe boys centre however, his mother has been unable to raise rest of the fees which amounts to sh 20,660.
Yassir who is supposed to report to Kakamega high school on the 13th of January says his dream is to become a doctor.
A total of 1,083,456 candidates sat the 2019 KCPE examination in 2019.
The distribution of the grades were as follows: 9,770 candidates were in the bracket of 401 to 500 marks, 243,000 candidates were in the bracket of 301 to 400 marks , above201 to 300 marks ,500 ,000 candidates were captured in this bracket.
262, 000 candidates scored between 100-200 marks while 2,497 candidates with special needs sat for their exams whereby the first candidate in this category scored 414 marks and 211 scored between 300 to 490 marks.
Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha had indicated that the government will provide 9,000 scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
