Three people have been confirmed dead following a Thursday morning bus attack by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Lamu.

The ‘Mombasa Raha’ bus was travelling from Mombasa to Lamu when it was attacked by the suspected militants along Lamu- Garsen highway.

The militants are said to have flagged down the bus at Nyongoro area, but the driver suspecting they could be terrorists sped off instead forcing them to shoot at the bus severally.

“02/01/2020 at around 1230hrs it was reported that a bus (Mombasa raha) KCH 141Z was attacked by armed gun men ,The bullets landed on the right front wheel damaging it, and other bullets landing on both sides of the bus body….three men were shot at close range…killing them instantly ..one man injured on the arm and one on the head they have been rushed to Garsen and witu dispensary respectively,” read a police report.

Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said the police are yet to establish the number of passengers that were in the bus.

“I can confirm three people were killed. Several others have been injured,” said the County Commissioner.

“We are looking for the passengers’ list. We want to know how many people were in that bus and if everyone has been accounted for,” he added.

The number of deaths could go higher considering the nature of injuries sustained by those who travelling in the bus.

The attackers are said to have fled into the forest.
