Mombasa among counties marking International Condom Day

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa County is one of seven counties selected to mark the International Condom Day that is marked on 13th February ahead of Valentine’s day.

Hundreds of people are expected to get tested for HIV in the county.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation -AHF in collaboration with other health stakeholders in the county like National Aids Control Council –NACC, county health ministry are commemorating this day by offering HIV testing, counseling and free condom distribution.

Speaking to Baraka FM on Tuesday, AHF regional prevention program coordinator Joseph Wachira said they are expecting over 300 people especial the youth, to come out for the counseling and testing.

Wachira added that the function will begin at 4 pm at The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, and it will end at around 10 pm.

“We will be having several activities like condom distribution, condom education, HIV Testing and talking to the youth about HIV prevention’’, said Wachira.

Other counties selected to observe this day include Kilifi, Nairobi, Makueni, Turkana, Murang’a and Homabay.

AHF said it’s expecting to test over 500,000 people in the selected counties and distribute over a million condoms.

AHF which started its operations in Kenya in 2007, distributed 4.8 million condoms and provided HIV testing services to 526,618 people last year.

In Mombasa, AHF did 41,976 HIV tests and distributed 259,572 condoms.

The AHF is set to unveil its 2018 International Condom Day song, “A Condom is always in Fashion.”
