Four dead, thousands displaced in Lang’ata Fire

Nairobi, KENYA: At least four people are feared dead following fire incident that broke out at Kijiji informal settlements in Lang’ata Nairobi.

According to the Acting Director for National Disaster and Management Unit NDMU Pius Masai, the bodies that were recovered from Debris on Monday morning are yet to be recognized, hence, urging the victims to come out in large numbers and identify the body of their loved ones.

The fire that started on Sunday night saw thousands of residents rendered homeless and unknown amount of property destroyed.

“Unfortunately about 6000 thousands households are affected. The families are sheltered at Ngei primary in Southlands at the moment” Said Masai.

He appealed to well-wishers and friends to support the affected families with food, medical supply among other items.

Area Member of Parliament Nixon Korir who arrived at the scene early Monday morning said that he has been in touch with the county government of Nairobi in trying to salvage the situation by ensuring that more fire engines are added into the area.

The cause of the fire is yet to be known as investigation is still ongoing as well as search and recovery exercise of bodies.

Preliminary investigations by the police showed that the fire might have been caused by an electric fault in one of the affected houses.

The displaced families have sought refuge at Ngei Primary School.
