Lamu, KENYA: A Kenya Wildlife Service-KWS officer was on Tuesday arraigned at the Lamu law courts after he was found in a lodging with a 14-year-old school girl in Hindi town on Sunday.

Lamu county deputy commissioner Louis Rono said the police were tipped off by members of the public who spotted the officer getting into the lodging with the standard eight girl at Heshima Guest house at around 2 pm on Sunday.

Rono said the police force would not tolerate sexual predators who prey on underage children to satisfy their urge and promised that the law would take its course.

“We sent fellow police officers who found the officer with the girl inside the room. He was arrested immediately. He has been arraigned in court. If found guilty, he will be punished in accordance with the law in order to deter similar acts,” he said.

The officer has been charged with child defilement

Villagers have however urged the courts to ensure the culprit is severely punished for his crime saying they are afraid the case could collapse since it involves an officer.

“We fear the case could be compromised since it involves one of theirs. We want the police to ensure their fellow officer is prosecuted in order to serve as an example to others who think they can sexually molest children and get away with it,” said Julius Mwaniki.

Cases of young girls being sexually abused are on the rise in Hindi Division with parents accused of failing to report assault cases on time with many preferring an out of court settlement instead of having them reported to the police and charges pressed.

One such case is that of December last year when an 80-year-old man raped and infected a nine-year-old girl with HIV in Hindi.

The young girl is yet to get justice as the man continues to walk around scot-free.
