Kilifi, KENYA: A Journalist working with one of the media houses in Kenya Zomolo Wanje was on Thursday night arrested and remanded by police in unclear circumstances.

It is alleged that Wanje was arrested at the Malindi police station where he had gone to take out his brother who had been arrested on issues concerning a motorbike (bodaboda).

Wanje who reports from Malindi for Radio Citzizen was later on allegedly forced to switch off his phone to cut off communications and when he tried to inquire why he had been arrested he was not given any reason.

According to a source close to him who wished to remain anonymous, he has not established the reason for his arrest as up to now but the incident occurred immediately when his brother was released from the cells.

“For sure what happened is something that is really disturbing us because we don’t know the reason behind all this. We are worried,” Said the source.

Wanje was released from the cells on Friday morning after spending a night at the cell.

Malindi OCPD Matawa Muchangi has however refuted claims of the journalist being arrested.

“I have not heard about an incident that a journalist has been arrested. I have not been informed anything by my officers concerning that incident.” Said Muchangi.

It is said that police in Malindi have been having some feud with journalists after a story done earlier that had painted some of them as corrupt.

Since then the police-journalists relationship deteriorated immensely.
