Mombasa, KENYA: National LPG enhancement project dubbed Mwananchi Gas Project is set to roll out the 6Kg complete cylinders (gas, burner & grill), trading under the brand name “Gas Yetu”, come January next year in Mombasa.

In mid-2016, the Government working with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum through National Oil Corporation, announced the launch of the project which plans to introduce 4.3 million cooking gas cylinders into Kenyan households in the next three years.

In an exclusive interview with Baraka FM on Tuesday, a supervisor at National oil station in Mombasa Susan Kusu, said the anticipated project is set to begin in the county come next year January.

“We still do not have them here in Mombasa but in Nairobi they are available. However, we expect to start distribution starting next year January,” she said.

She said the cooking gas cylinders are available in Nairobi at the moment.

She urged consumers to be patient saying they expect to start selling the cooking gas cylinders January 2018.

The government had set aside Sh2.2 billion to acquire 720,000 cooking gas cylinders and several refill plant machinery, as it rolls out a programme to entrench use of the commodity among low-income households.

Under this project, the 6Kg gas cylinder is being distributed at a discounted price of sh. 2000 to households as opposed to the current cost of about sh. 4, 000 , which many would otherwise not afford.
