Nyeri, KENYA: Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru passed on Tuesday morning after being involved in a  grisly road accident at Makenji, Murang’a County.

Governor Wahome Gakuru was earlier involved a tragic road accident together with his driver and bodyguard that occurred early this morning at Kabati near Kenol.

According to county speaker Nyeri County Assembly Speaker John Kaguchia, he was rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries on arrival; he died as medics prepared to airlift him to Nairobi for specialized care.

He was heading to Nairobi for a talk show accompanied by his bodyguard and driver when his car veered off the road and hit a rail guard.

According to Police, the governor’s car had four occupants at the time of the crash— him, his personal assistant Albert Kaguru , his bodyguard Ahmed Abdi and the driver Samuel Kinyanjui Wanyaga.

Police attributed the crash to a “tyre burst during a heavy downpour.”

The personal assistant’s right hand and leg are broken and police were still looking for his wrist at the scene of the crash.The bodyguard’s legs were seriously injured while the driver is okay.

Through his Facebook page, Dr. Gakuru had earlier posted about his son being among the candidates sitting for their Form Four national exams at Alliance Boys High School in Kiambu County.

“Earlier with Alliance Boys High School KCSE Candidates including my son at my Runda Residence in Nairobi to pray and encourage them in their final exams that kicked off today. Together with All Candidates Countrywide, I tender best wishes from myself and also on behalf of County Government of Nyeri. May our dear Lord guide you through during this period.” posted Governor Gakuru.

Governor Gakuru becomes the second Nyeri governor to die to in office after Governor Nderitu Gachagua, who passed on in February this year.
